How to use visualization to achieve any goal
The Power of Visualization
Did you know that simply thinking about what you want has been proven scientifically to aid in helping you to achieve it? According to Psychology Today, “Brain studies now reveal that thoughts produce the same mental instructions as actions.”
In other words, this means that your brain can’t tell the difference between stuff you do, and stuff you think about. Close your eyes and see yourself driving your dream car down an empty highway, your brain reacts as if it’s really happening. The same synapses fire as if you were actually driving that Lamborghini down the Audubon! Basically, you just sent a message to your brain that this experience is part of your story and it’s important. Now your entire being will be attuned to any and everything that will make that happen.
Thus, if you visualize what you want, your brain will go out of its way to find out how to get it without you even noticing its doing the work. This process is referred to as The Law of Attraction.
As elementary as this sounds, most people don’t truly know what they want. They have an idea based on pop culture or other beliefs but if you asked them to describe this goal in detail, they would have a very hard time putting it into words, or even pictures.
It is because of this, that most people don’t get much out of visualizing. They don’t really visualize much at all!
Do you really know what you want?
Consider these two dreams:
“I want a nice car.” It doesn’t really tell you much. What kind of car? What make and model? I don’t even know what the writer means by nice!
Next, consider this one:
“I want a 2018 Mazda Miatta with black interior, and a little dice hanging from the mirror, and on the passenger seat, I want a Prada pocketbook, and I want to be listening to Bon Jovi as I grip the leather steering wheel.” Which one of those two scenarios paints a better picture for you? Which one did you see in your mind as you read it? The more specific you are about what you want, the more your brain will know what to look for to get it to you.
Put it into Practice
Here are some ways to bring some color into your visualizations to bring them to life- the more you use them, you will find the ones that work best for you and give you the most clear picture of what you are trying to achieve.
1. First, pick a topic that you would like to focus on. It can be as grandiose or as finite as you would like. You will want to choose something you truly want and not just a whim. The more passion behind the desire the better.
2. Next, go to the bookstore and find some magazines on the subject. Sit and sip your favorite beverage and allow yourself to look at them all without any judgement. DO NOT look at price tags or cost. This is just the dreaming phase.
3. Then, start writing, or drawing, or jotting down your dream. Be as specific as possible. Pretend you are taking your reader on a tour of whatever it is. For example if you are describing the home you want to build, talk about the color of the exterior but also, what do the cabinets look like and what’s in then? What does the floor feel like under your feet? What sounds do you hear? The more specific you allow your vision to be, the more powerful it will prove on your quest to obtain it!
4. Do NOT allow doubt to deter you! If negative thoughts creep in, recognize them and remind yourself that they are a product of an old way of thinking. Immediately return to your task and keep right on dreaming.
Get Your Dream on!
That’s all there is to it! The more you dream, the better you will get at it and the less foreign it will seem. You will find yourself dreaming things you didn’t even think your imagination could come up with. Then as those dreams are realized, you will be able to use those small victories to fuel your faith for the bigger ones. There is no limit to what you can accomplish if first you can see it in your mind.
